University postpones Armenian conference Thursday, May 26, 2005
Boğaziçi University, which was accused by some of treason for organizing a conference on the Armenian issue, decides to suspend the event
ANKARA - Turkish Daily News
The Boğaziçi University Rector's Office announced on Tuesday that a conference on “Ottoman Armenians During the Fall of the Empire,” scheduled to start yesterday, had been postponed after the university became the subject of serious allegations from various quarters.
The statement released by the office said the conference aimed to create an opportunity for a scientific discussion, but unfortunately, the matter was taken out of context. “We believe statements made even before the start of the conference will damage the scientific independence of state universities. Due to the possible consequences of the conference, we have decided to postpone it.”
Conference condemned:
Justice Minister Cemil Çiçek said on Tuesday that the conference would be tantamount to stabbing Turkey in the back, adding, “I wish I had not renounced my authority to open criminal cases as justice minister.”
He said at a time when the entire country was campaigning to show that the Armenian genocide allegations were false, holding a conference at which people supporting the Armenian view would be free to air their opinions constituted a violation of national interests.
He said nowhere in the world did freedom and autonomy for universities mean irresponsibility.
He said if the government had any power over such matters, it would have intervened.
Republican People's Party (CHP) Istanbul deputy Şükrü Elekdağ stated on Tuesday that the conference aimed to disseminate Armenian propaganda, saying that it was very unfortunate that Boğaziçi University had allowed itself to be used.
After the postponement decision was announced, a group members from the Union of Turkish Nongovernmental Organizations protested in front of Boğaziçi University campus, accusing the university of helping Armenian nationalists.
They said they expected the cancellation, not the postponement, of the conference, claiming that the university had just postponed its treason against the Turkish nation.
IHD denounces Çiçek:
Human Rights Association (IHD) President Yusuf Alataş said on Wednesday that the postponement of the conference was due to reactions from Justice Minister Çiçek and other politicians and that this showed how easy it was for people to interpret freedoms in accordance with their interests.
In a statement released on Wednesday Alataş said the statements made by the government and the opposition showed the extent of freedoms in Turkey and accused Boğaziçi University of caving in. He said such retreats were the main reason freedoms in Turkey did not develop.
He called on all universities to wage a campaign for freedom. “Believe me when I say that you will not be alone.”
Conference postponed, but debate continues Thursday, May 26, 2005
ISTANBUL - Turkish Daily News with wire services
A planned gathering of Turkish historians and academics questioning the official Turkish view of the 1915 deportation of Armenians by the Ottoman Empire was postponed yesterday before it opened after strong opposition was heard from the government and opposing circles.
Organizers of the conference, postponed by Istanbul's Boğaziçi University, where the meeting was to be held, said they would decide where and when to stage the gathering.
The organizers had said they had not invited academics who were expected to talk about the official line on he Armenian issue and that this had sparked controversy in scientific circles earlier this week.
Muge Göçek, a professor of sociology at Michigan University who traveled to Istanbul for the conference, said she was disillusioned.
"I am very sad and disappointed," Göçek was quoted as saying by The Associated Press on Wednesday. "It would have been a forum that showed that democracy worked in Turkey and that different voices can be heard."
The Human Rights Association (IHD) was critical of Justice Minister Çiçek. "We strongly condemn the politicians and especially the justice minister ... who prevented the Armenian conference from taking place through pressure, threats and statements that make [organizers] targets" of attacks, the IHD said in a statement on Wednesday.
